Achilles blow for Bergkamp

Dennis Bergkamp will miss Arsenal FC's UEFA Champions League game against AJ Auxerre.

Dennis Bergkamp will miss Arsenal FC's UEFA Champions League game against AJ Auxerre after picking up an achilles tendon injury.

One-week absence
Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger announced today that the Dutch international had received a knock while playing in his side's 4-0 win at PSV Eindhoven on Matchday Two and would be unavailable for the game against Auxerre as well as the Premiership meetings with Leeds United AFC and Sunderland AFC.

'Inflamed achilles'
"Dennis has an inflamed achilles after getting a kick in the first half against Eindhoven," Wenger said. "He will miss tomorrow, certainly Auxerre and Sunderland [AFC] next Sunday."

Rare away trip
Bergkamp's appearance in Eindhoven was his first in an away match in European competition for two years. His fear of flying has meant staying behind for previous away matches but Wenger gave him special dispensation last week to travel to Eindhoven by car.

Kanu to come in
Bergkamp made way for Nigerian international Nwankwo Kanu after 80 minutes in Eindhoven and the Nigerian is likely to take his place against Leeds United AFC at Elland Road this weekend.

Scoring record
The reigning English champions have been in sparkling form this season and can break Chesterfield FC's English league record of scoring in 46 consecutive matches tomorrow.
