Porto cruised into the Portuguese League Cup semi-finals thanks to a 4-1 win against Académica. Jackson Martínez opened the scoring after five minutes before doubling his tally with a superb back-heel. Though Mbala Nzola put Académica back in contention, further goals from Gonçalo Paciência and Evandro – via a penalty – rubber-stamped victory for the Dragons.
Round of 32 contenders Atlético, Barcelona and Juventus were all in domestic cup action on Wednesday ...
Arsenal have added to their defensive options with the capture of Villarreal CF centre-back Gabriel Paulista. Gunners forward Joel Campbell earlier joined the Yellow Submarine on loan until the end of the season as part of the agreement, having first signed a new long-term contract with the north London club.
Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been given a two-match ban following his dismissal against Córdoba at the weekend. The 29-year-old will miss the upcoming Liga games against Real Sociedad (Saturday) and Sevilla (4 February), but will be back for the derby against Atlético on 7 February.
Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has been speaking to Sky Sport News about his return from injuries and the mood in the Bayern camp ahead of Friday, when they take on Wolfsburg in their first game of 2015. "I feel very good. I will find my rhythm and strength with every game," the 30-year old said.
Schweinsteiger insists that despite an 11-point cushion over second-placed Wolfsburg, Bayern will not repeat last year's mistake when they took their foot off the gas after winning the Bundesliga and their form suffered.
"I don't think we will make the same mistake again. We have incredible quality and lots of players who enjoy being on the pitch and want to win every game. We will keep our focus up until the last game."
