Guardiola set to extend Barça tenure

FC Barcelona have announced they have reached an agreement with Josep Guardiola that will see him sign a one-year extension to his contract, tying him to the Camp Nou until 2012.

Josep Guardiola has agreed terms to remain as FC Barcelona coach until June 2012.

Guardiola's deal was due to expire at the end of the season, but he will sign an extended contract "in the next few days". The 40-year-old former Azulgrana midfielder, who won six Liga titles and one European Champion Clubs' Cup as a player at the Camp Nou, assumed the coaching reins in 2008.

He enjoyed immediate success, leading Barcelona to glory in the UEFA Champions League, Liga and Copa del Rey in his first campaign in charge. In so doing, he became the sixth man to lift the European Cup as both player and coach.

The Spanish titleholders topped UEFA Champions League Group D this season and will face Arsenal FC in the round of 16 on 16 February and 8 March. Guardiola's charges are seven points clear of rivals Real Madrid CF at the head of the Spanish table, having beaten Club Atlético de Madrid last weekend to register a record-breaking 16th successive Liga victory.
