Webby nomination for Champions League site

The official online home of the UEFA Champions League is in the running for the accolade of world's best sports website after receiving a nomination for the 17th Webby Awards.

The official UEFA Champions League website has been honoured as one of the world's top five sports sites with a nomination for the 17th Webby Awards – considered to be the internet equivalent of the Oscars.

The UEFA Champions League section on UEFA.com, which covers Europe's premier club football competition, is up for a Webby Award – as chosen by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences panel – and is also subject to a public vote to determine the Webby People's Voice Award. Vote here.

The UEFA Champions League section has continued to evolve season on season, with key features including:

• Expert commentary, live photos, statistics, analysis, tactical lineups and heat maps tracking every player's movement in our MatchCentre

• Live pre-match and matchday blog coverage from reporters across Europe

• Exclusive video interviews with the competition's top players and coaches

• Extensive social media presence on Facebook and Twitter

• Free video highlights of every fixture

• A Matchday Live audio show with commentaries, interviews and debate

• A range of games including Fantasy Football, Player Rater and Predictor

• An extensive history section, with in-depth video features on classic games

• Behind-the-scenes photography and dedicated match galleries

• A comprehensive statistics section and player profile pages

The rise of the UEFA Champions League site has been especially marked on social media. The competition's official Facebook page has gained over twice as many new fans as any other leading sports league in the last six months, taking its total to over 7.7 million. Meanwhile, the @ChampionsLeague Twitter account – launched in August – already has in excess of 600,000 followers, while more than 3 million users are following the competition on Google+ and YouTube.

UEFA.com has been recognised by the Webby panel numerous times, including being shortlisted for the Sports Award in 2011. This year the UEFA Champions League section has been nominated alongside NBA.com, the Red Bull Signature Series, London 2012 web and mobile, and the BBC Olympic site.

All Webby winners will be announced on 30 April and honoured at the 17th Annual Webby Awards at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City on 21 May, four days before this season's UEFA Champions League final.
