Knee injury forces Basinas out

Panathinaikos FC's Angelos Basinas will miss his side's UEFA Champions League Group E opener.

Panathinaikos FC's Angelos Basinas will miss his side's UEFA Champions League Group E opener against Manchester United FC next Tuesday due to a partially torn knee ligament.

International injury
The 27-year-old defensive midfield player sustained the injury during Greece's 1-0 UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying victory against Armenia in Yerevan on Saturday. The injury will keep him on the sidelines for around 20 days - meaning he will miss league games against Kallithea FC and AEK Athens FC as well as the United match at Old Trafford.

Trio recover
Basinas's place in the Panathinaikos team will be taken by either Jan Michaelsen or Silvio Maric. However, the good news for coach Itzhak Schum is that Polish forward Emmanuel Olisadebe, Romanian playmaker Lucian Sanmartean and Cameroonian attacking midfielder Joel Epalle will all be fit to play at Old Trafford after recovering from various problems.
