Sagnol sidelined for a month

Willy Sagnol is expected to miss FC Bayern München's next two UEFA Champions League games after knee surgery.

FC Bayern München defender Willy Sagnol has undergone knee surgery and will be out of action for the next four weeks.

Cartilage damage
The French international suffered cartilage damage to his right knee in a 3-2 Bundesliga defeat by VfL Wolfsburg earlier this month. After the injury failed to settle down, Sagnol was sent for an operation in Heidelberg last night and will almost certainly not be available for Bayern's UEFA Champions League visit to RSC Anderlecht on 30 September. He also looks set to miss the trip to face Olympique Lyonnais on 21 October.

Hitzfeld comment
Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said: "He was due to have an operation last year, but he decided to have alternative treatment. Now there was no way to avoid surgery." Hitzfeld has particular problems in midfield with Sebastian Deisler, Jens Jeremies and Mehmet Scholl all injured.
