German international Jens Jeremies could make an unexpected return to action on Wednesday night after seven months on the sidelines when FC Bayern München take on VfL Osnabrück in the German Cup.
Effenberg back
Jeremies, who injured his right knee back in April in Bayern’s league win over SC Freiburg, has returned to the squad for the Osnabrück clash. However, with playmaker Stefan Effenberg also back to fitness, Jeremies is likely to find himself confined to the bench with Thorsten Fink and Effenberg occupying the two central-midfield positions.
Torn muscle
Effenberg suffered a setback in his fitness struggle when he tore a muscle in his right thigh in the home clash against 1. FC Nürnberg after enduring a three-month absence due to a foot injury. However, he should be ready to take part in the match on Wednesday.
Kahn injured
On a negative note, goalkeeper Oliver Kahn pulled out of training on Monday after an old knee injury flared up again and will definitely not play in Osnabrück. The 32-year-old is one of many absentees for coach Ottmar Hitzfeld including Bixente Lizarazu, who has achilles trouble, and Samuel Kuffour, who has a muscle injury in his thigh.
