The UEFA Champions League trophy is coveted by many of the top players in the world, as well as by Europe's major clubs. Football fans like to get close to the trophy as well – and enthusiasts in the United States will have the chance to view the prestigious silverware over the next few weeks during the 2010 UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour.

Presented by UEFA Champions League partner Heineken, the tour will visit New York from this coming weekend until 17 February, Boston (20-23 February), Chicago (26 February-3 March) and Los Angeles (13-16 March) on the latest of what has been a resoundingly successful series of intercontinental trips in recent years. Previous tours of Asia (2007), Latin America (2008) and Africa (2009) have seen thousands of football fans flock to events to have their photo taken with the silverware, meet the star players who have served as Trophy Tour Ambassadors, and experience the mystique of one of football's blue-riband competitions.

"The trophy has now become a true global icon representing the excellence of the UEFA Champions League worldwide since it was first presented to Celtic FC at the 1967 final, after the original trophy was given to Real Madrid CF when they won it for a sixth time in 1966," said UEFA in announcing the United States tour on Wednesday. "Since then, for all the world's greatest players playing at club level, the trophy has symbolised the ultimate achievement in European club football."

This year, as in previous editions, famous former players such as Eusébio (Portugal), Steve McManaman (England), Edgar Davids (Netherlands), Zico and Bebeto (Brazil), Michael Laudrup and Brian Laudrup (Denmark) will act as Trophy Tour Ambassadors in the USA. UEFA will announce more details in due course.

In addition to the trophy itself, original memorabilia from previous finals and matches will be on display, as will the Champions Gallery, a unique 30-minute movie spectacle depicting the defining moments since competition began as the European Champion Clubs' Cup in the 1955/56 season. The Trophy Tour gives football fans of all ages the opportunity to share the excitement of the UEFA Champions League – and Heineken will also have the opportunity to promote its own activities on this high-profile event platform.

"The UEFA Champions League has a long and distinguished heritage and is the pinnacle of European club football," said David Taylor, CEO of UEFA Events. "The trophy itself represents the ultimate prize of the UEFA Champions League globally. We are happy that by taking the trophy to the USA with Heineken, American soccer fans will have the chance to spend an unforgettable moment with the trophy. The Trophy Tour with Heineken is a chance for us to give something back to all the fans in the USA."

"Heineken, as the most international premium beer brand, sponsors the UEFA Champions League for the fifth consecutive year," added Hans Erik Tuijt, Heineken's brand activation manager. "We want to share this unique and memorable experience with fans all over the world, and what better way than to be able to see and be close to the very esteemed Trophy itself. Heineken is very proud to be the only UEFA Champions League partner that can bring the Trophy outside Europe and into the USA for the first time."
