Xavi and Pedro extend Barça deals

As they bid to win the FIFA World Cup together with Spain, midfielder Xavi Hernández and forward Pedro Rodríguez have signed new, extended contracts with Liga champions FC Barcelona.

Midfielder Xavi Hernández and forward Pedro Rodríguez have both agreed new extended contracts with FC Barcelona as they prepare to fly out to South Africa as members of Spain's FIFA World Cup squad.

The 30-year-old Xavi, who has spent his entire career with Barcelona, was originally contracted to the club until June 2014, but his new agreement could see him remain at Camp Nou until 2016, provided the team captain continues to play in at least half of their games. Xavi played in 53 of Barcelona's 59 fixtures this season, and with 527 appearances in all competitions, is now within 26 of Migueli in the club's all-time rankings.

Meanwhile Pedro, who scored Spain's final goal in Tuesday's 6-0 friendly defeat of Poland in Murcia, has agreed to extend his current term by one year until 2015. Born in the Canary Islands, the 22-year-old has forced his way into the first team under Josep Guardiola this season, scoring 23 goals in all competitions. As Spanish champions, Barcelona will compete in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League group stage.
