Boghossian fills Janko gap at Salzburg

Fresh from reaching the third qualifying round, FC Salzburg have signed 1.97m-tall Uruguayan forward Joaquín Boghossian on a four-year contract as a replacement for Marc Janko.

Promising Uruguayan forward Joaquín Boghossian has been signed by FC Salzburg as a replacement for Marc Janko.

The Austrian champions had a vacancy for a lanky striker after the prolific Janko moved to FC Twente with a legacy of 75 goals in 108 league games. The 1.97m-tall Boghossian fit the bill, and arrives from Argentinian club CA Newell's Old Boys on a four-year contract. The 23-year-old has been capped by Uruguay at youth level and was in the preliminary squad for the FIFA World Cup, after scoring 18 goals in 34 league matches for Newell's, whom he joined from CA Cerro in 2009.

Boghossian said: "I took a long time to choose my first European club, but I am confident Salzburg are the one where I can best develop. The club are very well managed." Salzburg sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer added: "His profile looks good for us. He is strong in the air and confident in attack."

The target man could make his debut on Saturday when Salzburg welcome FC Wacker Innsbruck in their first home Austrian Bundesliga fixture of the season, having drawn their opener 0-0 at SV Kapfenberg. Next Tuesday, Salzburg continue their UEFA Champions League campaign with a third qualifying round first-leg trip to AC Omonia after completing a 5-1 aggregate win against HB Tórshavn this week.
