Arsenal FC manager Arsène Wenger has admitted he does not know when Thomas Vermaelen will return from an injury that has proved worse than expected.

The 24-year-old defender suffered an Achilles tendon problem during Belgium's UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier against Turkey in Istanbul on 7 September. "At first we thought it would be a question of days, now it looks to be long," said Wenger. "At the moment I cannot say exactly when he will play again." Former AFC Ajax centre-back Vermaelen has not played for Arsenal since the end of August.

The Gunners have also been hit by injuries to Robin van Persie, Aaron Ramsey, Bacary Sagna, Laurent Koscielny, Manuel Almunia and Emmanuel Frimpong, while captain Cesc Fàbregas has only just returned to action. "We have been hit hard by injuries, I concede that," rued Wenger.
