New hamstring strain for United striker Owen

Michael Owen will miss Manchester United FC's next UEFA Champions League fixture away to Bursaspor after announcing he has sustained a new hamstring injury in training.

The 30-year-old made the last of his four Premier League appearances this season on 2 October, when he was taken off at half-time in the goalless draw at Sunderland AFC with a muscle injury.

Owen had hoped to feature in last night's League Cup tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, which United won 3-2 to reach the quarter-finals, but instead faces more time on the sidelines.

"It's not going great," said the striker. "I had a bit of a tight groin a while ago and I've trained for a week preparing for last night's game but then I had a setback. Unfortunately, that ruled me out for last night and will rule me out for a few weeks as well. It's all part and parcel of football – everyone gets injured. Hopefully I can come back and be as strong as ever."

Owen, who has enjoyed only 14 minutes of UEFA Champions League action this term, will therefore sit out next Tuesday's trip to Turkey where United will be looking for maximum points to stay top of Group C.
