FC Internazionale Milano have made their first signing of the winter transfer window, bringing in defender Andrea Ranocchia from Genoa CFC on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

The former AS Bari man, who won his first senior Italy cap against Romania in November, joined up with his new Nerazzurri team-mates on 29 December before completing his transfer today. The 22-year-old will help to fill the defensive void left by Walter Samuel, who will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Rannochia could be in line to make his first appearance under Inter coach Leonardo – who replaced the deposed Rafael Benítez last month – when Inter take on second-placed SSC Napoli on Thursday. Inter, seventh in Serie A, continue their UEFA Champions League defence in the round of 16 against FC Bayern München on 23 February and 15 March.
