Weir prolongs Rangers stay

Rangers FC captain David Weir has signed on for another year with the Scottish champions after leading the Glasgow club to their third consecutive title last season.

Rangers FC captain David Weir will contest another season with the Scottish champions after putting any retirement plans on hold to sign a new deal.

There had been speculation that the 41-year-old centre-back would hang up his boots after leading the Glasgow club to a third consecutive title last season, but he has agreed to commit to a fifth full Ibrox campaign as Ally McCoist's men prepare to enter UEFA Champions League qualifying.

"This is the place I want to play and as long as the manager thinks I can still do a job then I'm happy to sign here," said former Scotland and Everton FC defender Weir, whose side will face Malmö FF or HB Tórshavn in the third qualifying round on 26/27 July and 2/3 August.

McCoist has also tied down Northern Ireland midfielder Steven Davis, who has put pen to paper on a new five-year contract at Ibrox. Davis, 26, started all but one of Rangers' 38 Scottish Premier League games in their title-winning campaign last term.
