• Stephan Andrist scored his first two goals for the club, also claiming an assist for Huggel's effort, as Basel stretched their unbeaten run to nine games in all competitions with victory against third division Schötz in the last 32 of the Swiss Cup. They have won seven during that sequence.

• The game was Heiko Vogel's first in charge, having assumed the helm on 13 October when Thorsten Fink's departure to Hamburger SV was confirmed. The 35-year-old is expected to remain in the post until at least the end of December.

• Alexander Frei has scored nine goals in his last six outings for Basel, including three penalties.

• Aleksandar Dragović scored his first goal in 28 games for Basel on 1 October, in a 3-0 win against Servette FC.

• Basel have scored in each of their opening 11 league matches this season but have managed just five wins.

• Marco Streller was rested at Schötz after complaining of muscular problems last week.

• On 17 September Scott Chipperfield marked his first appearance of the season following a torn muscle with a goal and two assists as Basel beat fourth tier FC Eschenbach 4-0 in the first round of the Swiss Cup. He claimed another assist, for Andrist's second, on Saturday.

• Valentin Stocker (knee ligaments, out since 23 April), Gilles Yapi (knee ligaments, 24 July) and Kay Voser (ankle, 17 September) are sidelined.

• Genséric Kusunga, who missed the first four games of the season with a hamstring problem, has been out with a knee injury since 25 August but is back in full training.

International duty
• Fabian Frei made his senior international debut on 7 October as Switzerland lost 2-0 in Wales to miss out on the UEFA EURO 2012 play-offs. Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka also started, as they did four days later in a 2-0 win against Montenegro when Fabian Frei was an unused substitute.

• Dragović played every minute as Austria won in Azerbaijan (4-1, 7 October) before drawing away to Kazakhstan (0-0, 11 October).

• Luisão made his 78th appearance in UEFA club competition for the Portuguese side on matchday two, breaking António Veloso's Benfica record.

• The Eagles advanced to the Portuguese Cup fourth round with victory at second division Portimonense.

• Eduardo, Nélson Oliveira and David Simão made their Benfica debuts and Miguel Vítor was handed his first appearance of the season as Jorge Jesus rang the changes ahead of the Basel game. Rodrigo scored his first goal for the club.

• Bruno César scored with a free-kick to take his tally to five goals in 464 minutes for the club.

• Benfica extended their unbeaten start to the season to 14 games in all competitions, though they have won just three in seven on their travels.

• Jorge Jesus's side have kept just four clean sheets in in 2011/12.

• Óscar Cardozo has scored ten times this season for club and country, but a run of four games without a goal represents his most barren spell since August 2010.

• Javi García has missed Benfica's last two games with a calf injury picked up in training.

• Enzo Peréz (right knee) picked up a minor knock in training at the start of September and has not played since.

• Ruben Amorim returned from international duty with a left thigh problem and he and Pablo Aimar (Achilles) were not risked on Friday.

International duty
• Amorim and Eduardo were unused substitutes as Portugal suffered a 2-1 UEFA EURO 2012 defeat in Denmark on 11 October, sending them into the play-offs. Amorim was also on the bench for the 5-3 win against Iceland four days earlier.

• Axel Witsel played every minute as Belgium beat Kazakhstan 4-1 on 7 October and lost 3-1 to Germany four days later.

• Maxi Pereira, who started every game as Uruguay claimed a record 15th Copa América in July, was in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying action as his country beat Bolivia (4-2, 7 October) and drew with Paraguay (1-1, 11 October).

• Cardozo was in that Paraguay side, having come on as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat in Peru four days earlier.

• Benfica unveiled their first signing of 2012/13 on 10 October, agreeing terms with Paraguayan forward Derlis González, 17.
