While acknowledging FC Bayern München could and perhaps should have had more goals at Villarreal CF, Toni Kroos – who set the German side on the way to a 2-0 victory with a composed seventh-minute finish – pointed to his team's quality as they made a positive start in UEFA Champions League Group A. Villarreal pair Giuseppe Rossi and Cristián Zapata, though disappointed with the outcome, were adamant the Spanish side would regroup swiftly.
Toni Kroos, Bayern forward
We are happy enough with a 2-0 win but obviously we could have scored more given the chances we had. We played much better in the second half than the first. We made the ball zip in the passing, the game was under control.
We didn't allow Villarreal a sniff of goal, but we should have added more ourselves. This is a very tough group with top-quality teams from all the best leagues in Europe. But we want to win it and we have the quality.
Nils Petersen, Bayern forward
Villarreal played very well in the first half. For us it was very important to score first because it had been hard to create space. It was a great time to score and immediately their pressure dropped off a little bit. We pressed and worked well in the first half but even better and more intensely in the second half. My instructions were to create space and get goals but the coach asked me to work back and help the defending too. It's a big bonus for us that the other two teams drew, it makes this win ever more advantageous for us. But in general we won't be looking at what our rivals do because we are a good, powerful team and our destiny is in our hands.
Giuseppe Rossi, Villarreal forward
They are Bayern, they are a good team – world class. In the first half we did well, they only had a couple of shots on goal. But in the second half I don't think we went out with sufficient intensity, we didn't play as we were supposed to. Bayern kept moving the ball and we should have done better.
Credit to our opponents tonight but the group stage is long and we have five more games. This is a team with a lot of character, there will be a fightback. This is a big stage and we still hope to do well.
Cristiàn Zapata, Villarreal defender
We are a bit sad about the result but it is the first game and we needed to do more to achieve the score we wanted. Naples [is next]; over there we have to play compactly and keep the ball us much as possible. We have to be ready to take advantage of any slips they make. Bayern were good, that's true. But we really didn't play our football, especially after their first goal. They scored, they got confident and we didn't reach our usual standard of play.
