United's Cleverley out for a month

Tom Cleverley will miss the start of Manchester United FC's UEFA Champions League campaign after suffering ligament damage to his right foot which will keep him out for a month.

Manchester United FC will be deprived the services of Tom Cleverley for the next month after the midfielder suffered ligament damage to his right foot during Saturday's 5-0 Premier League win at Bolton Wanderers FC.

It was originally feared that the 22-year-old had picked up a fracture after being forced off with eight minutes gone following a challenge by Kevin Davies, but the injury is not as severe as first predicted. "Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Tom Cleverley will spend the next four weeks on the sidelines," read a statement on the club's website.

That will keep the England Under-21 international out of United's opening two UEFA Champions League fixtures in Group C, and Sir Alex could also be without defensive duo Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra for Wednesday's opener at SL Benfica. "Jonny is doubtful for Wednesday," explained the Red Devils' manager. "He got a knee in the hip in the second half which was pretty painful, while Patrice got a kick on the kneecap."
