Valencia lose Canales to serious knee injury

Valencia CF will be without on-loan midfielder Sergio Canales for much of the season after the Spanish Under-21 international underwent surgery on his right knee.

Valencia CF's worst fears over Sergio Canales have been realised with news that the attacking midfielder will be sidelined for six months after partially tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Currently on loan from Real Madrid CF, Canales suffered the injury during last weekend's 1-1 home draw against Athletic Club Bilbao. Although early tests indicated a serious injury, Valencia only confirmed the extent of the damage after the 20-year-old underwent arthroscopic surgery in the Spanish capital on Friday.

Valencia return to UEFA Champions League action against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Tuesday having lost in Germany last time out.
