Inter, Bayern and Benfica in last 16

FC Internazionale Milano, FC Bayern München and SL Benfica all made progress to the round of 16 on a night when AFC Ajax and SSC Napoli took huge strides towards joining them.

FC Internazionale Milano, FC Bayern München and SL Benfica are the latest three clubs through to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 and both AFC Ajax and SSC Napoli look well placed to join them.

Bayern only required a draw at home to eliminated Villarreal CF, but two Franck Ribéry goals ensured a 3-1 victory that leaves the Spanish side, without a point, unable to even reach the UEFA Europa League. Mario Gomez's two goals took him to six in the group stage, one ahead of Lionel Messi.

SSC Napoli look well placed to join Bayern after a 2-1 defeat of Manchester City FC to move a point ahead of the Premier League leaders, with a visit to Villarreal to come. City need Napoli to slip up and beat group winners Bayern.

Inter knew just before kick-off at Trabzonspor AŞ in Group B that their progress was sealed due to LOSC Lille Métropole's early 2-0 win at PFC CSKA Moskva, their first in the section. Claudio Ranieri's side promptly clinched first place with a 1-1 draw. Trabzonspor are a point ahead of Lille – who they visit on 7 December – and CSKA, who must travel to Inter. Whoever wins out of Lille and Trabzonspor will go through; CSKA need that game to be a draw and get three points themselves.

The third former European champions to progress were Benfica in Group C thanks to a 2-2 draw at Manchester United FC, Pablo Aimar swiftly equalising after Darren Fletcher had put the home side in front on 59 minutes. That pair are now only one point clear of FC Basel 1893, who ended FC Oţelul Galaţi's European season with a 3-2 away win, but Benfica's head-to-head record against both United and the Swiss champions mean they cannot finish below second even if they lose to Oţelul. Basel can knock out United with victory in a fortnight.

In Group D, Real Madrid CF were already through, and confirmed first position by beating eliminated GNK Dinamo Zagreb 6-2, the late consolations the visitors' maiden goals in this competition and the only ones conceded by the nine-time champions in the section. But the race for second place is still alive after AFC Ajax stayed three points ahead of Olympique Lyonnais with a 0-0 draw in France, matching their opening result. Ajax have a superior goal difference to the tune of seven but next must welcome Madrid while Lyon go to Dinamo.

Groups E to H continue on Wednesday night with holders FC Barcelona and AC Milan, who meet at San Siro, the only two clubs currently through from those sections.
