FC Bayern München are expected to be without Bastian Schweinsteiger for several weeks after the German international tore the lateral collateral ligament in his right ankle during Wednesday's German Cup victory at VfB Stuttgart.
Schweinsteiger limped off 17 minutes into the 2-0 success and after a subsequent examination of the injury the 27-year-old will need to wear a cast for a week. While his full recovery time remains unclear, the midfielder's involvement in Bayern's UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg trip to FC Basel 1893 on 22 February is now in serious doubt.
"Regarding Bastian's return, we will communicate a prediction at a later time," said Bayern team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahr.
The dynamic Schweinsteiger, who was sidelined for the last two months of 2011 after breaking his collarbone during the 3-2 group stage win at SSC Napoli on matchday four, is one of Bayern's most influential players and has made 14 Bundesliga appearances this season. Bayern host Basel in the return leg on 13 March.
