Per Mertesacker will be unavailable for Arsenal FC's UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg trip to AC Milan because of an ankle injury.

Mertesacker was forced off after 72 minutes of the 2-1 victory against Sunderland AFC in the Premier League on Saturday and was ruled out of Wednesday's visit to San Siro after the game. "We are a bit worried about his ankle because he goes home on crutches," said the Gunners' manager Arsène Wenger. "He has done some ligament damage, but how big that is we will have to check. For sure he is out for Wednesday."

Arsenal travel to Milan having finished top of UEFA Champions League Group F. The return leg is scheduled for 6 March.
