Michael Ballack will be forced to watch from the sidelines when Bayer 04 Leverkusen face FC Barcelona on Tuesday because of a calf injury.

Ballack featured in all six of Leverkusen's UEFA Champions League Group E fixtures but will now miss the round of 16 first leg against the reigning champions. The former German international sustained the knock to his calf during training on Sunday, having remained on the bench throughout his side's 1-0 Bundesliga loss at Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

Barcelona travel to the BayArena having tasted defeat themselves this weekend, losing 3-2 to CA Osasuna. The Camp Nou return will take place on 7 March.
