AFC Ajax have brought in Danish defensive midfielder Christian Poulsen as a free agent, with the 32-year-old signing a two-year contract with the UEFA Champions League group stage contenders.

"Christian Poulsen is a very good player with a lot of experience," said the Dutch title holders' coach Frank de Boer. "We were looking for a defensive midfielder to replace Vurnon Anita [who left the club for Newcastle United FC]. The advantage with Christian is that he has played at the highest possible level. He is a top sportsman and a real leader, which is very useful in a young squad like ours."

"Everyone in Denmark knows Ajax and what a big club they are," added Poulsen, who joins countrymen Lasse Schøne, Viktor Fischer, Christian Eriksen and Nicolai Boilesen at the Amsterdam ArenA. "I am looking forward to being part of the club. Ajax have a great history. I am proud to become the fifth Dane in this squad. I have already spoken with Christian Eriksen and Nicolai Boilesen, who I know from the national team."

Poulsen ended his international career after making his 92nd and final appearance for Denmark at UEFA EURO 2012. He has played for FC København, FC Schalke 04 and Sevilla FC – where he won the 2006/07 UEFA Cup – as well as Juventus and Liverpool FC, and spent last season in France with Évian Thonon Gaillard FC.
