• United are beginning their 17th successive UEFA Champions League group stage campaign.

International duty
• Eleven United players were on senior duty during the international break: Antonio Valencia (Ecuador), Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck (England), Patrice Evra (France), Javier Hernández (Mexico), Robin van Persie (Netherlands), Jonny Evans (Northern Ireland), Nani (Portugal), Joshua King (Norway) and Robbie Brady (Republic of Ireland).

• Van Persie set the Netherlands en route to a 2-0 FIFA World Cup qualifying victory against Turkey on 7 September.

• King made his debut for Norway as a second-half substitute during their 2-0 qualifying loss to Iceland.

• David de Gea kept a clean sheet against Switzerland in Spain's penultimate 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier. The holders will play Denmark in next month's play-offs.

• Valencia was sent off as Ecuador drew 1-1 with Uruguay in a World Cup qualifier on 11 September.

• Hernández's second-half header helped Mexico defeat Costa Rica 1-0 at home and become the first country to progress to the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

• Debutant Brady, not in United's UEFA Champions League squad, set up two goals and scored one himself as the Republic of Ireland defeated Oman 4-1 in a friendly at Fulham FC's Craven Cottage.

• United announced on 8 September that Phil Jones had undergone knee surgery, ruling him out for six to eight weeks.

• Van Persie brought up his century of Premier League goals with a hat-trick in United's 3-2 triumph at Southampton FC on 2 September.

• Anders Lindegaard signed a new four-year contract on 3 August.

• Chris Smalling was ruled out for ten weeks after having an operation on a metatarsal injury on 21 July.

• Giggs captained Great Britain to the quarter-finals of the Olympic football tournament. Cleverley was also in the squad.
