International duty
• Fifteen Madrid players were on senior duty during the international break: Iker Casillas, Raúl Albiol, Álvaro Arbeloa, Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso (Spain), Mesut Özil, Sami Khedira (Germany), Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe, Fabio Coentrão (Portugal), Karim Benzema (France), Luka Modrić (Croatia), Gonzalo Higuaín, Ángel Di María (Argentina) and Marcelo (Brazil).

• After helping Spain to UEFA EURO 2012 glory in July, Casillas, Arbeloa, Ramos and Alonso helped La Roja begin their FIFA World Cup defence with a 1-0 qualifying win in Georgia on 11 September.

 • Özil scored twice as Germany opened their qualifying campaign with a 3-0 home win against the Faroe Islands on 7 September and was on target from the penalty spot four days later in a 2-1 triumph in Austria.

• Ronaldo scored his 37th international goal in Portugal's 2-1 defeat of Luxembourg.

• Higuaín and Di María struck as Argentina beat Paraguay 3-1 in qualifying on 7 September, with Higuaín on target again four days later in a 1-1 draw away to Peru.

• Madrid lifted the Spanish Super Cup on 29 August with an away-goals victory over FC Barcelona. José Mourinho's side lost the away leg 3-2 but won the return 2-1.

• Liga champions with a record 100 points and 121 goals last term, Madrid endured their worst start to a campaign for 11 years when they failed to win their first two matches against Valencia CF and Getafe CF.

• Ronaldo and Barcelona's Lionel Messi finished runners-up to Andrés Iniesta in the voting for the 2011/12 UEFA Best Player in Europe Award, which was presented in Monaco on 30 August.

• Di María extended his contract until June 2018 on 9 August.

UEFA Champions League statistics
• City failed to reach the knockout stages last season despite picking up ten points in the group stage, matching the record for highest points haul without advancing. SV Werder Bremen (2006/07), Olympiacos FC, FC Dynamo Kyiv (2004/05) and PSV Eindhoven (2003/04) all suffered an identical fate.

International duty
• Ten City players were involved for their countries during the international break: Joe Hart, Joleon Lescott, James Milner (England), Aleksandar Kolarov, Matija Nastasić (Serbia), David Silva (Spain), Vincent Kompany (Belgium), Gaël Clichy (France), Edin Džeko (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Costel Pantilimon (Romania).

• Milner scored his first international goal as England opened their 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with a 5-0 defeat of Moldova on 7 September.

• Kolarov got off the mark himself with a powerful free-kick during Serbia's 6-1 qualifying triumph over Wales on 11 September, before crossing for Zoran Tošić to score the second goal.

• Džeko helped Bosnia and Herzegovina match their biggest margin of victory with a second-half hat-trick in an 8-1 success against Liechtenstein. He struck again four days later as they beat Latvia 4-1 and is now the nation's 25-goal leading all-time scorer.
