• Thulani Serero is expected to be out until the new year after tearing a groin muscle during Ajax's 1-1 draw with ADO Den Haag on 23 September.

• Babel equalised at Den Haag, his first goal for Ajax since rejoining the club. He scored again three days later in a 3-0 Dutch Cup second round win away to FC Utrecht, where Fabian Sporkslede, 19, made his debut.

• Kolbeinn Sigthórsson is expected to miss the group stage after aggravating a shoulder injury in August.

• Siem de Jong has been appointed Ajax captain following Vertonghen's departure to Tottenham.

• Madrid became the first team to record 100 UEFA Champions League victories, group stage to final, on matchday one. Karim Benzema's goal was their 350th in the competition; they have conceded 196.

• Cristiano Ronaldo had seven shots on goal on matchday one; more than any other player.
