AFC Ajax are expected to do without Kolbeinn Sigthórsson for their entire UEFA Champions League Group D campaign after the Iceland forward suffered the recurrence of a left shoulder injury.

The 22-year-old, whose injury-plagued spell with the Dutch champions began in July 2011, will undergo surgery on Friday to amend a problem which has consistently troubled him. He is likely to be out for a minimum of four months.

"This is bad for me and the club that has put faith in me," said Sigthórsson, who has been capped 11 times by Iceland and has struck eight goals in 15 Eredivisie games since joining from AZ Alkmaar the summer before last. "It is bad that I can't show what I can do. I just have to wait before I can return but I feel I have good support."

Frank de Boer's Ajax side begin their UEFA Champions League season with a trip to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday in an uncompromising section also containing Real Madrid CF and Manchester City FC.
