A small club by their own admission, CFR 1907 Cluj have lofty ambitions in this season's UEFA Champions League having dispatched SC Braga on matchday one. Confidence is understandably high and the Romanian side mean business in an uncompromising group which also includes Manchester United FC and Galatasaray AŞ.
Forward Rafael Bastos, who scored twice against former club Braga to seal a 2-0 win in Portugal, said: "It was the match of our lives. Nobody believed in our team. We know we're the smallest club in the Champions League, but we have the quality to cause an upset."
It is little wonder that CFR are intent on making a name for themselves in this season's edition. This is a truly golden age for a club who were playing in the third tier of Romanian football only 11 years ago. Since then, they have won eight domestic trophies, including three league championships in the last five seasons.
"It is a club that is growing and wants to continue to grow. In the last six years they have won everything possible," Bastos told UEFA.com. "This year is important for us. We are in the Champions League and we want to make sure we win the league title again in order for the club to grow even more."
