FC Schalke 04 midfielder Julian Draxler is highly unlikely to be ready to face Arsenal FC in three weeks' time after undergoing surgery last night on a broken left arm.

The 19-year-old suffered the fracture 52 minutes into Schalke's 2-2 UEFA Champions League draw at home to Montpellier Hérault SC yesterday. The injury curtailed Draxler's UEFA.com Player Rater-winning performance, with the attack-minded teenager having scored the opening goal before being fouled in the area to earn the penalty that was converted by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Draxler was stretchered off as a result of that incident, however, and was immediately taken to hospital for an operation on the broken limb.

At 19 years and 13 days old, Draxler had just become the youngest German player to score in the UEFA Champions League, outstripping Lars Ricken who had netted for Borussia Dortmund aged 19 years and 100 days. Schalke, second in Group B with four points from two games, visit Arsenal on 24 October.
