UEFA Champions League hopefuls Montpellier Hérault SC are resigned to being without Karim Aït-Fana for the next six months after the midfielder injured his right knee during training.

The 23-year-old Moroccan international sustained the injury on Thursday and tests have revealed the severity of the complaint, indicating that he could be absent until April for the French champions. "The verdict is in after the medical examination," the player explained on Twitter. "I've ruptured my anterior cruciate ligament and will be out for six months."

Aït-Fana has contested both of Montpellier's games so far in UEFA Champions League Group B, scoring in the 2-2 draw at FC Schalke 04 on matchday two. René Girard's men lie third in the section ahead of their home meeting with bottom side Olympiacos FC on 24 October, while in Ligue 1 they are positioned 15th after a difficult start.
