Julian Schieber told UEFA.com "it doesn't get much better than this" after ensuring Borussia Dortmund ended Group D with victory against Manchester City FC. The striker scored the only goal of the game just before the hour and was delighted with both the Bundesliga title holders' sensational campaign to date and the vociferous home support. For City's Scott Sinclair, pride at making his UEFA Champions League debut was soured by the visitors' early elimination from European competition.

Julian Schieber, Dortmund striker
Obviously it's great to have scored the goal tonight, especially in front of a home crowd – it makes the victory all the more special. I've missed a few good chances in recent matches, so I was very happy the ball went in.

We knew ahead of the game that we'd finish top whatever happened, but the coach found the right words to motivate us. We wanted to make a statement for the club and ourselves and it turned out to be a great evening. With the fans behind us, it was absolutely class.

We're very proud to have taken so many points in this difficult group. It shows our quality and that we can compete with teams at this level. It's going to be really difficult in the last 16, but we finished top of a group containing only champions. Where does it go from here? It doesn't get much better than this, to be honest. We'll avoid the other group winners now, too.

Kevin Grosskreutz, Dortmund midfielder
We played really well from the first minute, in spite of several changes. You can see the quality we've got in our squad and we deserved to beat City. We're not starting to dream just yet, though. We're taking it one game at a time. We'll have two very difficult games in the last 16 and will have to see what happens there.

We were awesome tonight – it wasn't a case of Manchester City being poor. I'd like to play against Celtic in the next round. I know a lot of fans in Glasgow and it would be a dream come true for me to play there.

Moritz Leitner, Dortmund midfielder
We were outstanding tonight. We've never played in that formation and yet we did so well. It was a great evening for us. We targeted the last 16 and we've managed to get there. Now we'll have to see what happens and perhaps we can get into the quarters. I don't mind who we play against. If we continue to progress then we're sure to come up against Barcelona at some point. That would of course be a dream come true. Testing yourself against world stars like Messi, Iniesta and Xavi would be amazing.

Scott Sinclair, Manchester City midfielder
It was very disappointing, I think most of the boys will be going home feeling that. Now we've got to move on, concentrate on the league and make sure we do better in that. It's difficult to take. When we play in the Champions League we want to win and get through. Everyone's going to be disappointed that we didn't but all we can do now is push on.

It's great for me that I've made my [UEFA Champions League] debut, but it's not great that we've lost and didn't get through. Hopefully next year we can get back in.

[Dortmund] have got a great set of lads. They look quite strong and they've got great support behind them. I'm sure they can go far in the competition.
