Borussia Dortmund have announced that defender Łukasz Piszczek will have hip surgery after Saturday's UEFA Champions League final against FC Bayern München and is expected to miss the start of next season.

The Polish international has been playing through the pain barrier for several months, attempting to limit his absence to the team. Still, with the Bundesliga club estimating his recovery will take up to five months, the 27-year-old could be sidelined until November.

The right-back had a similar problem in 2008 while at Hertha BSC Berlin, when he was forced to sit out nearly half a year. Piszczek has missed just a handful of games this term, starting 11 of Dortmund's 12 matches en route to Wembley.
