Promising defender Guillermo Varela has joined Manchester United FC from Uruguayan outfit CA Peñarol.

The 20-year-old, who has been capped by Uruguay at Under-17 and U20 levels, moves to England for an undisclosed fee and becomes United's first signing since Everton FC manager David Moyes was confirmed as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor in the Old Trafford hot seat.

Varela will represent his country at this summer's FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. English champions United, beginning life after Sir Alex Ferguson, will start their 2013/14 UEFA Champions League campaign from the group stage.
