Ukrainian title holders FC Shakhtar Donetsk have bolstered their defensive options with the acquisition of centre-back Oleksandr Volovyk from city rivals FC Metalurh Donetsk.

The 27-year-old, who made 134 league appearances for Metalurh after joining the Premier-Liha club in 2006, has put pen to paper on a four-year deal. "This offer came as a huge surprise for me and all I can say is that I am very happy," said Volovyk, labelled "one of the country's leading defenders" by Metalurh sporting director Vardan Israelyan.

"He is a role model with a fantastic attitude. We would like to thank him for all he did for our club and wish him all the best with the reigning champions," added Israelyan. Mircea Lucescu's Shakhtar tackle FC Chornomorets Odesa in the Ukrainian Super Cup on 9 July and enter the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League at the group stage.
