Manchester City appoint Pellegrini

"This club has a clear vision for success both on and off the pitch," said Manuel Pellegrini after being appointed Manchester City FC manager on a three-year contract.

Manchester City FC have appointed the experienced Manuel Pellegrini as manager in succession to Roberto Mancini.

Pellegrini, who left Málaga CF at the end of the season, has signed a three-year contract with the 2011/12 English champions, who lost their title to Manchester United FC last term. The 59-year-old will take up his position on 24 June, with new signings in place including Jesús Navas and Fernandinho.

"I am delighted to accept this hugely exciting opportunity," Pellegrini said. "The club has a clear vision for success both on and off the pitch and I am committed to making a significant contribution.

"Everything is in place for Manchester City to continue to be successful and I am excited to be able to work with such a talented squad, the executive team and the board to deliver for fans who are renowned for their steadfast support."

A defender in his homeland with CF Universidad de Chile, Pellegrini began his coaching career there in 1987 and also worked with sides in Ecuador and Argentina before moving to Europe in 2004 with Villarreal CF. Pellegrini helped them to the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League semi-finals and, after spending 2009/10 with Real Madrid CF, took over at Málaga.

After his charges finished a club-high fourth in 2011/12, they reached the quarter-finals of last season's UEFA Champions League, which City begin next term in the group stage. Málaga today named Bernd Schuster as Pellegrini's replacement.
