Real Madrid CF's versatile defender Nacho Fernández has put pen to paper on a contract extension keeping him at the capital club until June 2017.

The 23-year-old – who joined Madrid's youth set-up in 2001 – made nine league appearances for the Merengues last season, as well as a UEFA Champions League debut in the 4-1 victory over AFC Ajax in December. He was later called into Julen Lopetegui's Spain squad that triumphed at last month's UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Israel.

Last season's Spanish Liga runners-up have already bolstered their ranks this summer with the arrival of Nacho's U21 international team-mate Isco and full-back Daniel Carvajal. Carlo Ancelotti's charges will begin their UEFA Champions League campaign in the group stage and will discover their opponents in the 29 August draw in Monaco.
