FC Metalist Kharkiv have confirmed the signing of attacking midfielder Alejandro Gómez from Calcio Catania for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old, who registered 16 goals in 106 league appearances for the Serie A side, has agreed a four-year contract with the 2012/13 Ukrainian Premier League runners-up. "Metalist were the most persistent club during negotiations and that's why I am here," said Gómez, who will wear the No15 shirt. "I have played most of my football on the left wing during the past two years and that's where I'm comfortable."

The former Arsenal Fútbol Club and CA San Lorenzo de Almagro player, who left his homeland for Italy in 2010, becomes the seventh Argentinian on Metalist's books. "I have played with Chaco Torres at San Lorenzo and was called up to the Argentina Under-21 team with Sebastián Blanco. I have also played with some of the others in the Argentinian league," said Gómez.

His new employers marked their UEFA Champions League debut with a 2-0 defeat of Greek outfit PAOK FC on Tuesday. The teams reconvene for the second leg of the third qualifying round tie in Kharkiv on 7 August.
