Club Atlético de Madrid have drafted in experienced goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubía from RC Deportivo La Coruña for an undisclosed fee.

The 33-year-old arrives at the Vicente Calderón on a one-year contract and to provide current Atlético No1 Thibaut Courtois – on loan from Chelsea FC – with serious competition in what will be a busy campaign for the UEFA Champions League challengers.

"You can imagine how happy I am to have come to such a big club," the former Spanish international said. "I know Atlético already have a great goalkeeper but I have come here to work and to compete in order to help the team. I'm really looking forward to getting started."

An Athletic Club academy product, Aranzubía made 194 Liga appearances during a ten-year spell in Bilbao before switching to Deportivo in 2008. Among the highlights of his 178 league games for the Galician side was the stoppage-time equaliser he scored in a 1-1 draw against UD Almería in 2011. Capped once, Aranzubía was part of La Roja's squad at UEFA EURO 2004 in Portugal.

Diego Simeone's team begin their 2013/14 UEFA Champions League campaign from the group stage.
