Club Atlético de Madrid have retained the services of forward Diego Costa for a further three seasons after the 24-year-old agreed to extend his stay at the UEFA Champions League group stage challengers until June 2018.

"I am very happy with this [new] deal which comes after I spent a lot of time trying to win the respect and affection of our fans, my colleagues and everyone at the club," the Brazilian international explained. "This is a very special moment for me. I would like to thank the club for the opportunity. I hope to become an even better player while helping [Atlético] to achieve all of their objectives."

The striker joined Los Rojiblancos in December 2006 but took time to settle, having spells on loan at SC Braga, RC Celta de Vigo, Albacete Balompié and Real Valladolid CF. He returned to Atlético for 2010/11 but was once again loaned out – to Rayo Vallecano – the following season and managed nine goals in 16 top-flight appearances.

Last term he netted 20 times in 42 outings in all competitions, including one in the Copa del Rey final victory against Real Madrid CF. Atlético secured third place in the Liga.
