FC Basel 1893 must cope without Marcelo Díaz for the remainder of the UEFA Champions League group stage after the midfielder was diagnosed with a broken rib.
The 26-year-old Chilean international aggravated a knock – initially sustained against England last week – during his country's 2-1 loss to Brazil in Toronto on Tuesday. "It will probably rule him out until the winter break," read a club statement after a scan in Basel today revealed the extent of the injury.
Díaz, who opened the scoring in Basel's 1-1 draw at FC Steaua Bucureşti on matchday three, therefore misses the Swiss champions' last two Group E fixtures – at home to Chelsea FC next Tuesday and against FC Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen two weeks later. Murat Yakin's side occupy third spot in the section, trailing second-placed Schalke by one point.
