Olympiacos and Leverkusen make it through

Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Olympiacos FC made the round of 16, Manchester United FC and FC Bayern München won their groups but Galatasaray AŞ and Juventus must wait.

Olympiacos FC and Bayer 04 Leverkusen won final-day deciders to book their places in the UEFA Champions League round of 16, but Galatasaray AŞ and Juventus must wait after their encounter was abandoned.

Heavy hail and snow in Istanbul meant that play was suspended in the match where Galatasaray needed to win to leapfrog Juventus into second place in Group B. It will resume on the 31-minute mark on Wednesday with the score 0-0.

As FC København lost 2-0 to Group B winners Real Madrid CF, with Cristiano Ronaldo becoming the first player to register nine goals in a group stage, the team that misses out on second spot between Galatasaray and Juve will progress to the UEFA Europa League round of 32 in third position.

In two other sections a qualifying berth was up for grabs with the contenders involved in separate games. FC Shakhtar Donetsk began the day second in Group A but as they lost 1-0 at Manchester United FC – who topped the section – Leverkusen prevailed 1-0 at Real Sociedad de Fútbol to pip the Ukrainian side to the last 16.

Like Shakhtar, Olympiacos had matters in their hands in Group C at kick-off. Despite squandering two penalties, they defeated eight-man RSC Anderlecht 3-1 to finish second on head-to-head above SL Benfica, who themselves beat first-ranked Paris Saint-Germain 2-1.

Both Group D qualifying slots were decided before today but top spot was not. FC Bayern München started three points ahead of visitors Manchester City FC, having won 3-1 in England. Bayern stormed into a 2-0 lead but although City came back to triumph 3-2 and end the holders' record run of ten consecutive competition victories, they were one goal short of first place and seeding in Monday's round of 16 draw. FC Viktoria Plzeň scored at the death to overcome PFC CSKA Moskva 2-1 and edge their guests to the UEFA Europa League on away goals, in Pavel Vrba's last match at the helm.

Groups E–H conclude on Wednesday with nine teams competing for five remaining round of 16 berths. The draw will take place at 12.00CET in Nyon on Monday, streamed live on UEFA.com.
