Bayer 04 Leverkusen winger Sidney Sam will join Bundesliga rivals FC Schalke 04 at the end of the season after putting pen to paper on a deal until summer 2018.

The 25-year-old, capped five times by Germany, has been in fine form this term with seven Bundesliga goals in 13 games but will move at the conclusion of the campaign after the Gelsenkirchen side reportedly activated a €2.5m release clause.

"It is not just his strong performances this season that have proved what kind of impetus he can give in attack," said Schalke general manager Horst Heldt. "He is versatile, very ambitious and wants to achieve a lot with Schalke. We are delighted he has decided to join the Royal Blues."

Sam made 47 league outings for Hamburger SV, where he started his career, then enjoyed two seasons on loan with 1. FC Kaiserslautern before transferring to Leverkusen in summer 2010. He has scored 23 Bundesliga goals in 83 appearances for the BayArena team.

Sam's current club face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League round of 16, while his future employers take on Real Madrid CF.
