Christian Clemens faces an uncertain few months after returning home early from FC Schalke 04's winter training camp with the recurrence of a pelvic problem.

The midfielder, 22, has been hampered by a pubic bone infection in recent months and admitted he is still some way off full fitness. "I had hoped things would be better in 2014 but the problem, which I have had since October, has worsened. I am out now," Clemens announced. The former Germany Under-21 player, who joined Schalke from 1. FC Köln last summer, has flown home from the training camp in Qatar to recuperate in Donaustauf, Bavaria.

Schalke are back in Bundesliga action on 26 January with a trip to Hamburger SV and coach Jens Keller is contending with a number of injuries besides Clemens. On-loan winter signing Jan Kirchhoff has ligament trouble, while Marco Höger and Dennis Aogo are out with torn knee ligaments. Benedikt Höwedes (thigh), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (knee) and Julian Draxler (thigh) are also struggling with knocks.

Schalke will take on Real Madrid CF in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
