For a few minutes midway through the first half of Tuesday's last-16 second leg, when Kaká cancelled out Diego Costa's early goal, AC Milan's UEFA Champions League campaign looked alive and well. Arda Turan's deflected strike to restore Club Atlético de Madrid's lead spoiled that, however. It left Andrea Poli wondering aloud to UEFA.com what might have been, before he and Christian Abbiati turned their thoughts to the future.
Andrea Poli, Milan midfielder
We started the game badly, conceding a goal after just three minutes. We relaxed after we scored and for 20 or 25 minutes I thought Milan were better than Atlético. We had our goal from Kaká but we conceded an unfortunate one from Turan. After that they were better than us, especially in the second half. We had problems for large parts of the game. We now have to try to lift ourselves. We want to finish the season in the best way possible.
Christian Abbiati, Milan goalkeeper
I think Atlético are fair winners and they deserve to be quarter-finalists. They have a good team and a good coach. We didn't play well [in the defeat at Udinese Calcio] at the weekend and we took another step back tonight. Their second goal was a pity for us as it took a deflection before dropping in. We now need to recharge our batteries for our next match.
