Atlético's Godín and Luís look back with pride

Diego Godín and Filipe Luís naturally were "very sad" after Club Atlético de Madrid's dramatic defeat but both were proud of their performance and campaign.

A week after clinching the Liga for Club Atlético de Madrid with his equaliser at FC Barcelona, Diego Godín was two minutes from doing the same in the UEFA Champions League final.

His first-half goal had put Atlético ahead against Real Madrid CF in Lisbon and it was still 1-0 going into added time, only for Sergio Ramos to level matters. Madrid ended up winning 4-1 in extra time, and while Godín and team-mate Filipe Luís naturally were "very sad" both were proud of the game the played and the campaign they have had.

Diego Godín, Atlético defender
Obviously I feel very sad, because we lost this match and that's a shame. In the end, though, I am very proud of this team, of all the people at the club and all the fans. We can be very proud, we can hold our heads high as we've had a spectacular season and we were successful on the pitch. But this is football, you win and you lose. So we have to congratulate the champions, and we can remain serene as we've had our share this season.

It's been a spectacular season, with winning the Liga, and we know what that means and how difficult that is. But OK, it's a pity, because if you play in a final you want to win it. But we couldn't. We tried everything. But in the end, as I said, we can be very proud, of my team-mates and the fans.

Our fans have been supporting us very well for many years, hoping, cheering and suffering with us. And we have shown that we as a club and team always try to give our best when we play.

Filipe Luís, Atlético defender
I feel very sad as we were so close and we had our hands on the trophy. So to then lose it hurts, of course. Real Madrid played a great match and they believed until the end: congratulations to them. We have to lift our heads up again and think about the future.

It certainly hurts. If Real Madrid had won 3-0, then it wouldn't hurt so much, but to have it almost in your hands and then lose it like that, that hurts a lot. But OK, we have to congratulate them. They have a great squad and a fantastic team. They've played a great season, that's it.

We've played a fantastic season ourselves and it was great to mix it with the big teams in this competition. We wanted to win this title, it didn't happen, but we definitely played a great season.
