Six months out for Šmicer

Liverpool FC midfielder Vladimír Šmicer will be sidelined for six months after undergoing knee surgery.
Liverpool FC and Czech Republic midfield player Vladimír Šmicer will be sidelined for six months after undergoing knee surgery.

'Wish him well'
"Unfortunately, Vladimír will not play again for six months," said a statement on the English club's official website today. "It is disappointing news both for him and the club. We wish him well as he begins his recovery."

EURO semi-final
The 31-year-old, who joined Liverpool from RC Lens in 1999, missed over three months of last season with achilles and knee problems. However, Šmicer was part of the Czech squad which reached the UEFA EURO 2004™ semi-finals before losing to eventual winners Greece.

Eventful day
Liverpool had an eventful day yesterday. After being drawn against Grazer AK in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, Rafael Benítez's side lost their latest friendly 1-0 to FC Porto. Carlos Alberto scored the only goal in the 85th minute in front of 40,078 fans in Toronto.
