"I don't know if it is the most beautiful goal I've scored, but it's definitely the most unexpected one." Philippe Mexès was not the only one taken by surprise by his stunning overhead kick for AC Milan against RSC Anderlecht in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League group stage.
A solid (if enterprising) centre-back, Mexès has never had much of a reputation for the spectacular. That all changed on 21 November 2012, however, when the French international controlled Riccardo Montolivo's free-kick on his chest and executed an outrageous finish from the corner of the penalty area.
"When I've tried it in training it's never worked out," recalls Mexès, 32. "In the match against Anderlecht I managed to do it and score, although in the end I didn't really put it into the top corner on purpose. I tried it and it worked. I didn't really realise how big it would be. For a defender it's a dream. You dream of such a goal when you dream of scoring. It's like when you dream of receiving the ball in midfield and taking a shot and scoring, but you don't really expect something like that.
"Then such a ball comes to you, you control it well on your chest and I had the chance to try it. It will be difficult to repeat, and although the victory is all that counts, this will always be a beautiful goal which will be in my mind forever."
What about you? What rating would you give the goal?
