Athletic Club have secured Spanish international Iker Muniain's services for a further two seasons after the attacker agreed a new deal with the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League play-off entrants.
The Basque club's youngest-ever debutant and goalscorer, Muniain's contract had been due to expire next summer but the 21-year-old will now remain in Bilbao until 30 June 2017. The Pamplona native – scorer of 19 goals in 162 Liga games for Athletic – has also had his buy-out clause increased to €45m.
Since making his debut aged 16 in a UEFA Europa League third qualifying round tie against BSC Young Boys in 2009, the home-grown Muniain has become one of the continent's brightest attacking prospects. A UEFA European Under-21 Championship winner with Spain in 2011 and 2013, he was capped at senior level in 2012, the same year he was a UEFA Europa League runner-up with Athletic.
With the Leones finishing fourth in the last Liga campaign, Muniain will hope to help Ernesto Valverde's men into the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time since 1998/99 when they tackle an August play-off.
