FC Schalke 04 will be without defender Sead Kolašinac for the next six months after the Bosnian-Herzegovinian international tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Kolašinac sustained the injury during Schalke's 2-1 defeat at Hannover 96 in their Bundesliga opener on Saturday. He will undergo surgery on Tuesday and is expected to be sidelined until March.

Schalke, who enter the UEFA Champions League at the group stage, were plagued by injuries last season and the trouble has continued into this campaign. Midfielders Jefferson Farfán, Leon Goretzka, new goalkeeper Fabian Giefer and full-back Atsuto Uchida are currently also ruled out.
