Rúben Amorim could be out for several months after SL Benfica revealed the extent of the knee ligament damage the Portugal midfielder suffered on Sunday.

Amorim was taken off on a stretcher in the first half of Benfica's 1-0 win at Boavista FC and tests on Monday revealed a total rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee. The Portuguese champions say on their club website that "the player will have to undergo surgery in the next few days".

Amorim is likely to miss all of Benfica's UEFA Champions League group stage campaign and will also be out of contention for the start of Portugal's bid to reach UEFA EURO 2016. Paulo Bento's team kick off at home to Albania next month before a trip to Denmark in October.
